Cable Stone is a font I designed to represent the essence of the rural west of Ireland, where I grew up. The visual inspiration for this font draws from two iconic elements: Aran knit jumpers and dry stone walls, which both embody the unique character of the region.
For centuries, farmers across the west of Ireland have meticulously constructed dry stone walls, carefully balancing and wedging rocks together to define their lands, protect their homes, and safeguard their livestock. These walls stand as enduring symbols of the love and pride that the Irish people have for their land and traditions.
Aran jumpers, worn widely along Ireland's west coast, represent the deep-rooted heritage and resilience of the Irish working class. According to folklore, the wives of fishermen would sometimes use the unique stitching patterns in their husbands' jumpers to identify their bodies when tragically washed ashore after drowning. Stories like these have solidified the Aran jumper as a powerful symbol of Irish heritage and culture
